Friend Edition didn't start as a tech project. It started as Christmas Eve in Oregon, with a car full of stockings.
Every Christmas Eve, the founder personally hands out stockings to people experiencing homelessness. Each stocking is built with intention — what someone actually needs vs. what's cheapest to give:
Non-GMO, grass-fed beef jerky · real protein, non-perishable
Warm gloves · the small dignity of dry hands
Reading glasses · most homeless services don't stock these and people need them
A small Bible, for those who want one · faith and comfort are personal
A Christmas card · "you're seen" · the most powerful gift in the bag
Candy, an apple, an orange, a drink · the rituals of a normal holiday
A small amount of cash · because agency and choice are dignities too
And starting this year: a Friend Edition phone
Friend Edition is what happens when that tradition scales. Same intent — meeting people where they are, with what they actually need. Same respect — the privacy, the choice, the personhood. Expanded reach — year-round, through partner shelters, not just one Christmas Eve in Oregon.
When you donate $49 toward Friend Edition, you're not funding an abstract cause. You're contributing to something the founder has been doing by hand for years, with new tools added when the tools serve the mission.
Why a phone specifically
People experiencing homelessness need three things in common: shelter, food, and the ability to communicate.
Communication unlocks everything else. Calling a shelter. Confirming a job interview. Reaching family. Hearing a voice in the middle of the night when there isn't another option.
But the phone in most pockets isn't a friend. It's a billboard, a tracking device, a payment processor, and a manipulation engine. For someone in crisis, those are the wrong things to put in front of them.
Friend Edition is a phone that just listens. Voice-first AI. Built-in crisis resources (988, 211, local shelter directories). Works offline. No data leaves the device. No ads. No accounts. No surveillance.
How it works
1
You donate $49
One $49 donation funds one Friend Edition phone. 100% goes to this program — hardware, prep, shipping. Stripe handles the transaction; no markup is taken.
2
Donations pool until a phone is ready
Each phone is a recycled Android (~$45 hardware + $15 prep + shipping). Donations accumulate; when a phone is funded, we prep one.
3
JeffyAI Friend Edition is installed and locked down
Device is wiped, factory-secured, then Friend Edition is installed. Voice-first AI. Crisis resources preloaded. No accounts, no tracking. Even if lost, the phone leaks no personal data.
4
Partner shelter distributes
We don't hand phones to individuals directly. We ship to vetted partner shelters and homeless service organizations that already have trust relationships with the people they serve.
5
Documentation goes here
Every phone placed is logged with date, shelter name, and city. Monthly transparency reports posted publicly. Anonymized always. Faces only with explicit, meaningful consent.
Our dignity commitments
This program exists because we believe people deserve private technology even — especially — when they're going through the hardest stretch of their life. The way we run the program has to match that belief.
No exploitative photos. We do not show identifiable faces of recipients in marketing. Numbers, locations, dates — yes. Faces — only with explicit consent, never as a condition of receiving a phone.
Shelters consent for their residents. We work with partner organizations who have ethical standards for resident privacy already in place. They decide who receives, never us.
Recipients own the phones. Period. No tracking, no remote wipe, no recall. If someone uses it for something we wouldn't have predicted, that's their right.
No data is collected. Friend Edition runs entirely on-device. We have no servers receiving anything. Even if we wanted to know, we couldn't.
Stories are opt-in, never extracted. Recipients who want to share their experience get a microphone — text, voice, photo if they want. Everyone else gets privacy.
Public transparency reports. Monthly PDFs showing donations received, phones placed, partner shelters. You can see exactly where every dollar went.
Documentation from the field
Launch week, May 2026.
No phones have been distributed yet. As donations accumulate, we'll partner with homeless services in Oregon first, then expand. Every phone placed will be documented here with date, shelter, and city.
Bookmark this page. We'll update it as the program ramps.

If you run a homeless services organization and would like to receive Friend Edition phones for the people you serve, we'd love to hear from you. We're starting in Oregon and expanding outward.
A note from the founder
"I've been broke. Not homeless-broke, but broke-enough to know what it's like to feel the world doesn't have a place for you.
The stockings started because that's what I could do. One car, one Christmas Eve, in Oregon. The thing I kept noticing was the small dignities — that a pair of gloves, or a card with someone's name on it, or even just a few dollars to spend however they wanted, mattered more than the dollar value suggested.
Friend Edition is the same idea with a phone added in. A phone that listens instead of selling you out — that's a small dignity too. I want as many of those small dignities going out into the world as we can fund. Every donation is a piece of that. Thank you for being part of it."
